Changing Cylinders
A cylinder is the complete operating unit which usually consists of the "plug shell,"
"tumblers," "springs," "plug retainer," a cam/tailpiece or other actuating
device, and all other necessary operating parts to form your lock. It is easily recognizable as
the outside unit where the key goes in a lock on a door.
